Pre long weekend conditions

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

The south westerly wind that has been blowing for a few days now has turned to a light south easterly.  We have great ocean conditions, a calm launch, warm water temperature and very good visibility.  This is ahead of the long weekend, starting tomorrow.  Happy diving to all.

Unsettled ocean conditions

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

At the moment we have very unsettled dive conditions.  The water temperature has decreased to an icy 20 degrees C and the viz has dropped to around 8m.  diving is still superb despite this.  We are hoping for a south westerly wind to come through tomorrow to bring a shift in the current and bring in warmer water.

Pod of 20 bottlenose dolphins underwater

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

Despite an unsettled ocean, we had great sightings today.  I took Jared for his 1st openwater dive and he saw a pod of at least 20 bottlenose dolphins underwater whilst we were on scuba.  This is a magical way to start your dives and Jared was told, in no uncertain terms, how lucky he is to have witnessed this on his 1st sea dive.  The dolphins were in no hurry to move off and we had an absolutely magical time with them.  How lucky we are!!!!!!

Unsettled ocean conditions today

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

‘We had unsettled ocean conditions today with a swell and interesting launch conditions.  Water temperature has dropped to 20 degrees C and viz was around 10m with very little current.

Great shark sightings again

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

On a double tank dive, 1st dive was to Cathedral which produced 5 raggies inside Cathedral, one very large male.  Due to the swell and surge, this made the dive eerie as the viz was brilliant at times, until the swell passed overhead and we had sand flying all over the place.  The large male raggie came in very close with the swell,as if using this opportunity to check us out.  On ascending, we encountered a green turtle taking a few breaths of air before descending once again.  This was a perfect photo opportunity as it was not bothered by our presence.  2nd dive was at Howards Castle, which produced around 10 blacktip sharks, which were particularly interested in my unusual method of bringing them in.  up close and personal sightings were had of these sharks almost the entire dive and all thoroughly enjoyed these amazing encounters with these beautiful sharks.  A great day of diving at Aliwal Shoal.

South westerly swell

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

We have experienced the swell from the south westerly wind with surge on the reef.  Visibility is excellent, despite sand flying all over the place.  Water temperature is 25 degrees C.  The north-easterly is expected to come through quite strong today, so hopefully this will knock the swell down, decreasing the surge.

Overcast with rain but great diving

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

A south westerly wind came through this morning along with some much needed rain.  Diving conditions look great with an easy launch this morning. Water temp is 25 degrees C and visibility at least 25m.

Abundance of shark sightings

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

On yesterday’s shark dive 3 tiger sharks & around 25 blacktip sharks were sighted.  A superb dive was had by all.
